If you’d told me twenty years ago that Twitter would be a popular source of entertainment news in 2016, I’d have laughed at you because I was only five and “Twitter” sounds like a sound effect. The future is now, however, and Twitter most certainly is a popular source for entertainment news. The news that circulated yesterday, at least in the horror world, was that Kevin Bacon suggested that he’d be up for playing horror icon Freddy Krueger in a reboot of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
As a big fan of Bacon (Kevin is cool too), I’d be more than excited for him to take on the role; but come on. Just because you express interest in something on social media doesn’t mean that it will come to fruition. If it does, that’d be wonderful (can I make a down-payment on tickets this early in advance?), but if Twitter aspirations don’t pan out, we’ve got our own idea of who could play the sweater-wearing murderer. For your consideration, here are five actors who could play Freddy Krueger in an Elm Street reboot.
Though you might not see it behind that charming smile, Doug Jones is actually terrifying. A contortionist turned actor, Jones stands at 6’4″ with a slender frame and the ability to manipulate his body in the most frightening of ways. With roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Pan’s Labyrinth, the Hellboy franchise, and Hocus Pocus, Jones is no stranger to working in costume or heavy makeup – which makes him quite applicable for the role of Mr. Krueger.
Make no mistake about it, Walton Goggins is one of the greatest actors working today. Known for entirely slipping into whichever role he takes on, Goggins would kill it (wink, wink) as Freddy Krueger. With powerful performances in FX series’ The Shield, Justified, and Sons of Anarchy, Goggins has proven himself intense enough to take on Freddy – but it’s his ability to perform dark, twisted humor that makes this choice a no-brainer.
Three words: The Witch, The Witch, The Witch. As the father in the critically acclaimed horror film, Ineson gave one of the most intense performances in recent memory. With a strong physical presence and a unique voice that will rattle you to your core, Ineson would bring a horrifying intensity to the role of Freddy Krueger that would serve nightmares to a new generation.
Robert Englund became a horror icon because of A Nightmare on Elm Street, so why not let a pre-established horror icon take on the role of Freddy Krueger? With sadistic turns in House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, we can see Moseley bringing Krueger to life in demented fashion.
Perhaps a Nightmare reboot would be best, though, without pre-existing expectations. Robert Englund was little known before taking on the role of Freddy Krueger, and he went on to become one of the most iconic actors of the horror genre. If lightning can be captured in a bottle twice, Newman is the guy who can do it. With a darkly twisted performance as Joker in the short fan film Injustice for All that was reminiscent of Englund’s Freddy, Nicholson‘s Jack Torrance, and Christian Bale‘s Patrick Bateman, Newman has the acting chops to bring Krueger back in a big way.
It’s obvious by now that no film is safe from getting a remake. With one not-so-great remake already under Nightmare‘s belt, what harm could another actually do? We’d love to see any of these five actors, or even Kevin Bacon, step into the role of Freddy Krueger. What about you? Is there anyone you’d like to see take on the role? Let us know in the comments!
