We’ve seen some pretty bizarre crossover stories in Riverdale in recent years, but perhaps one of the most welcome is the recently revealed Archie Comics crossover Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica.
The new six-issue collaboration series from DC and Archie Comics will be co-written by Marc Andreyko and Paul Dini, with illustrations by Laura Braga. It will bring together the worlds of Gotham City and Riverdale, which it turns out are actually neighboring locales. When news breaks that the corrupt powers that be in Gotham intend to expand their dark, moody city into the lush marshlands that separate it from Archie’s home town, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy concoct a plan to kidnap their Riverdale counterparts, Betty and Veronica.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dini – who co-created the Harley Quinn character for the animated Batman series – described the concept as “The sort of offer you scream out ‘Yes!’ to before your eyes reach the middle of the email”. He went on:
“I’ve always wanted the chance to play in Riverdale and to help Harley and Ivy invade it is a dream come true. Writing this series with [Andreyko] has been like sitting on the lawn during summer vacation and reading a big pile of DC and Archie comics. Except we have to stay indoors and type a lot.”
In an attempt to breathe new life into the comic series, the staff at Archie Comics have had their titular character crossover with a host of unlikely characters including former President Barack Obama, Twilight, the rock band Kiss and even The Predator. Bringing in Batman’s 2 sassiest dames is the next logical step, and a million fan boy’s (and girls) dream mash-up.
Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica hits shelves this October, with a series of variant covers to be released concurrently by latest Archie scribe Adam Hughes.
