Lucasfilm has confirmed that an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film is in the works- an idea that Star Wars fans have spent many years clamoring for.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm is moving forward with the spinoff, though talks are still in the earliest of stages. Critically acclaimed director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader) is in negotiations to take over the project. It’s not yet been confirmed if Ewan McGregor- the resounding highlight of the prequels- will be reprising his role from the three entries, but he’s on the record with being up for it, and we’d like to think that it’ll happen.
THR also reports that, not only is there no script in place, but no screenwriters have come forward as possible contenders to tackle the story. If Daldry takes over Obi-Wan Kenobi’s film, he’ll assist Lucasfilm in overseeing the script and development- but there’s still no telling when we’ll actually see the film hit theaters. If it’s to be the next standalone spinoff film after the untitled Han Solo flick, we might see the film as early as 2020. Time will tell.
