Leprechaun, as well as the film series it belongs to, is a holiday classic. Though it isn’t traditional holiday fare, horror fans flock to Mark Jones’ 1993 original and its sequels whenever St. Patrick’s Day rolls around. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the fun horror classic, and all these years later, it remains cinematic gold.
I’m a die-hard fan of the original film (as well as its space-set fourth installment), so today’s announcement from SYFY WIRE has effectively made me tingly- and I haven’t even started drinking yet. The film, Leprechaun Returns, is exclusive to the SYFY network, and will premiere in March of 2019.
Picking up 25 years after the events of the original film, our amusing villain is revived in the modern day when a group of sorority girls unwittingly awaken him while tearing down a cabin to build a new sorority house. Unfortunately, the film will not feature Warwick Davis as the iconic horror baddie, but his replacement, Linden Porco, appears to be portraying the character in a similar manner to the famous actor.
Perhaps more exciting than the announcement itself is the team behind the upcoming film. Suzanne Keilly of Ash vs Evil Dead is in charge of the script, and Steven Kostanski, director of The Void, is taking over directing duties. Check out the first teaser below, and have yourself a merry little St. Patrick’s Day!
