This isn’t exactly Spaceballs 2, but it’s a step closer!

Over at USA Today, the news was announced that Rick Moranis will be reprising his Spaceballs role in an upcoming episode of the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. In the 1987 film from Mel Brooks, Moranis played Lord Dark Helmet – a spoof of Star Wars antagonist Darth Vader. This will mark the first time Moranis has played the role since then, although he is only providing the voice of the character in a dream sequence.

For series creator Adam F. Goldberg, casting Moranis on the show is a dream come true. “I’ve been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show,” Goldberg explained. “As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation, and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!”

In the special episode, Lord Dark Helmet storms Adam’s bedroom during a dream to prepare for a battle with the Schwarz – described as the show’s satirical take on The Force. According to the episode description, Adam “promises to get a sequel to Spaceballs produced before waking up.”

This is noteworthy as Moranis virtually retired from acting over 20 years ago. He was offered a chance to cameo in 2016’s Ghostbusters film, but declined. His final movie appearance was as the voice of Rutt in the 2006 animated film Brother Bear 2, so he’s clearly very selective about his roles.

Catch this episode of The Goldbergs when it airs on Wednesday, May 9th, on ABC.
