As a little girl, I grew up loving horror and everything about it. The blood, the gore, the screams, and the adrenaline rush that runs through my body…something that only this particular genre can execute for me. My love for everything horror has only grown with age and yet people still look at me like “you’re a girl, how can you love blood and guts so much?” My response, “how can you fucking not?”

No worries, though, every day more and more women are becoming badasses in the horror community and proving they have what it takes to go over and beyond what people expect from this genre. The GOREgeous Soska Sisters are a prime example of what women in horror can accomplish.

The Soska Sisters, Jen and Sylvia, also known as The Twisted Twins, are Canadian twin sisters who work together as film directors, actors, producers and screenwriters. They’ve made a huge name for themselves in horror and it all began around 8 years ago. Yes, only 8 years in the industry and they’re already kicking ass and taking names left and right.

Although they dabbled in a few things in the early 2000’s, their first big project together was Dead Hooker in a TrunkThey both wrote, directed, and starred in this awesome 2009 horror film. The story revolves around four friends that set out on an errand and find themselves fighting for their life after they discover the body of a dead hooker that was left in their trunk.

According to a post on their tWIStED tWINS PRODUCtIONS Facebook page:

“Eight years ago next month, our first film – DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK – had its first two screenings thanks to Women in Horror Month film festivals put on in the UK by Nia Edwards-Behi, and in Texas by Andrew Rose.

Before that, we spent a lot of money submitting to festivals around the world that replied with ‘We don’t screen those kinds of movies.’ Many of them didn’t even bother watching it.

Since then, we’ve continued to work in film, but the support we got from those initial DHIAT screenings changed our lives because the word was out and we found an audience.”

The Soska Sisters’ next big project was the 2012 horror film, American Mary. The story revolves around a medical student named Mary (Katharine Isabelle) who discovers the allure of easy money performing underground surgeries. Although it’s been a little over 4 years since this unique story has come out, it is still making waves in the horror community.

It seems like every day a new horror fan discovers the film and falls in love with this fantastically bloody and disturbingly unique story. A film that could only by conjured up by the most brilliant and deranged minds, aka The Twisted Twins!

The Soska Sisters – Hellevator

They continued to show their passion for horror in shorts, including the “W” segment in ABCs of Death 2 (2014). Their next big project that everyone is talking about began in 2015, HellevatorUp until then, the twins had created their own production company and written, produced, directed, and starred in their own films, but took it to another level when they created their own horror game show.

The premise of the show:

“Contestants form a 3-person team to take on 3 horror-themed challenges. Contestants that complete the solo challenges move on to the final labyrinth challenge as a team for a chance to win some more bonus cash.”

The show is growing strong and is unlike anything we’ve seen before. You can watch it on Netflix and stay updated with it by following Hellevator on Facebook and Twitter.

Just recently, they decided to do a giveaway to celebrate the 4th Anniversary for American Mary, here are the details:

“We want YOU to “Swede” AMERICAN MARY. I’ll admit, Sylvia and I have been plotting this evil scheme for some time. Re-create the film in this manner and YOU will not only get the glory of kicking all the artful ass, but be rewarded with this piece of cinematic history banner signed and personalized by us along with a prize package for your team.

Here’s what you need to know…..

* The competition starts NOW!

* ALL entries must be in and sent to NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 11th. That gives you just over a month.

* Your entries do not have to be and should not be the length of the actual film. 3 to 5 minutes is plenty.

* DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY. To “Swede” a film is to creatively recreate it by memory and with what you have available to you. BE CREATIVE.

* Only one poster prize for the winning team but there will be a prize package awarded so everyone will have some cool stuff.

* One entry per team.

* Pick the parts of the film that are most important to you. TRY TO DO IT BY MEMORY as we’re judging by passion not accuracy.

* Entries will be judged by CREATIVITY, INGENUITY, and PASSION.

* If you wanna rip and use any of the soundtrack from AMERICAN MARY, go for it.

* Entries from ALL ACROSS THE WORLD will be honored. We’ll ship anywhere.

* TOP ENTRIES will appear on the Twisted Twins YouTube channel on February 11th as the judgement commences!

* Each entry will be watched by me and Sylv and the winner will be announced on FEBRUARY 14th (Valentine’s Day) this year with a special video.

The Soska Sisters – Evil Twins from The Shining

Although we love what they do in the horror industry, the Soska Sisters are a dynamic duo beyond the camera. They are GOREgeous people who are grateful for what they have and give back to their community. One way they do this is by sponsoring an annual worldwide blood drive and encourage other people to help out. See? These ladies know how to have a bloody good time on and off the screen.

The Soska Sisters – Women in Horror

I really wanted to take time to recognize the incredible talent and beauty the Soska Sisters bring to the horror community. They prove that women can do it all and every day more and more women are taking a chance in this genre.

Like many before them, they’ve helped pave a bloody path for every little girl who dreams bigger than wanting to be the next Disney Princess unless, of course, that Princess just so happens to wear a crown made from the bones of her victims. Thank you, Soska Sisters, for being fantastic role models, not only in horror but your daily lives as well.
